Description of Santa Maria di Leuca kayak trip

On the way we will show you hidden caves and ravines, all to be explored! After putting on the life jackets and entering our kayaks, we will be ready to sail south from Marina di Felloniche , alongside the splendid Ionian coast of Santa Maria di Leuca. We will enter many caves including: Drago Cave, Della Stalla Cave, Tre Porte Cave, Del Presepe Cave, Del Diavolo Cave and Porcinara Cave. Finally we will land on the only beach in Santa Maria di Leuca, close to the elegant promenade, where we will stop for a swim and have a packed lunch. We will leave north to visit the Adriatic coast with the high cliff overlooking the sea, full of wonderful caves: Terradico cave, Vedusella cave, Delle Vore Cave and many others. Finally, the return to Marina di Felloniche will follow.

Starting time

The two seas in Santa Maria di Leuca

Santa Maria di Leuca is a village on the extreme southern tip of Salento. In front of its coast the watershed between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea looms . Under certain conditions, looking from the top of the cliff, it is possible to clearly see a real dividing line in the open sea, clearly distinguishable by the naked eye, actually due to the meeting between the currents coming from the Gulf of Taranto and the Canale d’Otranto. It is a spectacular phenomenon that really deserves to be seen at least once in a lifetime.

The coast of Santa Maria di Leuca

There are no great beaches in Leuca, but the beauty of its coast and the blue sea make Leuca one of the most visited and loved places in all of Salento. The coast is mainly high and jagged, with rocks falling sheer above the sea. From the kayak it is possible to visit a breathtaking coastal landscape dotted with infinite caves, from the largest to the smallest.

The caves along the coast of Santa Maria di Leuca

Together with Polignano a Mare and Gargano, this is the place where you can meet the largest number of sea caves in Puglia . In this trip there are dozens! While only a few can be visited by boat, practically all can be visited by kayak! Sea kayak is in fact the perfect boat for this type of trip (we explain this topic in this article).

The Costa Otranto park

In 2006, the territory of Santa Maria di Leuca became part of the Costa Otranto park. A park that aims to protect and safeguard the coast and the sea, leaving it intact and unspoiled for the next generations.
